Kopi Luwak - Jacu Bird - Wild Bat

Featuring some of our rarest varieties, these wild animal coffees are uniquely original, delicious and ethically sourced: Organic Kopi Luwak (India), Jacu Bird (Brazil) and Wild Bat (Costa Rica). Wild animal coffee is some of the scarcest coffee in the world, with much of the supply dwindling due to climate change and animal endangerment.

Kopi Luwak:

Foraged from the droppings of wild Kopi Luwaks (Civet Cats), the ‘magic’ of Kopi Luwak occurs in two parts: First, the wild Luwak, selects the ripest coffee cherries using its acute sense of smell. Then, as it passes through the Luwak, the digestive acids create a molecular change in the coffee bean, leaving it discernibly more brittle once collected and dried, enhancing the beans natural qualities.

Properly foraged wild Kopi Luwak is only ever available in very small quantities as the process of finding these droppings within large forests is exceptionally time consuming. The beauty of the coffee is that the civets are extremely selective and will only consume perfectly ripe coffee cherries, while the proteolytic enzymes in the civet cat’s digestive track effectively remove any bitterness.

All our Kopi Luwak coffee beans are 100% ethically sourced - foraged only from wild civet cats.

Balmaadi Estate, India:

The 150 year old Balmaadi Estate in the Nilgiris District of Tamil Nadu, India is certified as organic, eco-friendly and socially responsible by the Institute for Marketecology (IMO). The boundaries of this high altitude (4,000 to 6,000 ft above sea level) estate provide a refuge for the incredibly varied wild life of Nilgiris, including panthers, elephants and the Kopi Luwak (civet cat) whose foraged droppings are collected from the surrounding forest.

These organic, high altitude Kopi Luwak coffee beans are particularly dense, yielding a beautifully dark and rich cup with overtones of caramel and citrus.

Jacu Bird:

These indigenous birds inhabit the forest and feast on only the very ripest coffee cherries produced in the forest shade. Once the Jacu bird has ingested the cherry, it goes through its digestive system and the local villagers collect the odourless droppings, composed of the extremely rare coffee beans, and transport them to the drying areas where they are dried, cleaned and stored in their parchment for up to three months.

The result of this labourious, unique process is a sweet, full-bodied speciality coffee more acidic than typically found in the region, with a clean, smooth aftertaste and no bitterness.

Our Jacu bird beans are 100% ethically sourced - foraged only from wild birds.

Camocim Estate, Brazil:

The Camocim Estate, with just 50 hectares of land under coffee cultivation, is one of the smallest coffee plantations in Brazil. Located in Pedra Azul, Espirito Santo, the small coffee estate is home to a native South American bird called the Jacu.

 Wild Bat, Costa Rica:

The Artibeus Jamaicensis is the bat species found in the forests surrounding the Coffea Diversa Estate in Biolley, Southern Costa Rica on the border of Panama. The wild bats feed on the exotic coffee cherries but, unlike most wild animal coffees, like the famous Kopi Luwak, the cherries are not ingested whole. Instead, the bat breaks the skin of the ripe cherry with its teeth, feeds on the pulp and licks the sugar-rich mucilage thereby initiating a uniquely natural coffee processing method.

This gorgeous coffee is grown at high high altitudes. The coffee cherries are left on the tree and exposed to the sun as nature's own way of drying the coffee in its parchment. Combined with the discriminating selection by the bats, this makes for an unusual cup of speciality coffee - remarkably fruity and floral with a very delicate acidity.
