About This Coffee

In 2004, a team of National Geographic scientists identified five regions of the world where people live not only longer but with remarkable vitality. They called them the Blue Zones: Ikaria in Greece, Sardinia in Italy, Okinawa in Japan, Loma Linda in California, and Nicoya in Costa Rica.

Of these, Nicoya is the only Blue Zone to cultivate coffee in meaningful quantities. Here, a combination of fertile volcanic soils, clean air, abundant rainfall, and strong community traditions underpin both the extraordinary longevity of its people and the unique qualities of its coffee.

Roasting

We roast all our coffee beans in small artisanal batches each day to preserve freshness and consistency. All ground coffee is ground to order just before shipping, so you can be assured your coffee has arrived as fresh as possible.

The majority of our coffees are medium roasted as a standard, unless otherwise stated on the product page.

Shipping

All orders are packed and shipped from our roastery in the UK.

We aim to process and ship orders within 1-2 working days, although large orders containing multiple varieties of roasted coffee may take slightly longer. 

UK shipping is free on orders over £100.

For international orders, shipping costs and any duties & taxes are calculated and prepaid for at checkout - Any charges at customs are then dealt with in advance by us to ensure your coffee arrives as quickly as possible. 

US shipping is free on orders over $250.

Taste Profile

Unlike the bright, high-acidity profiles of other Costa Rican regions, Nicoya’s cup is marked by a softer refined acidity balanced by a full, rounded body. Tasting notes include winey tropical fruit tones with dark chocolate, molasses, and caramel.

The Nicoya Peninsula

Tucked away in Guanacaste’s highlands, the Nicoya Peninsula is better known for its pristine Pacific beaches than for coffee. Production here is extremely limited, which is why few outside Costa Rica realise that this Blue Zone yields such distinctive beans. Unlike the bright, high-acidity profiles of other Costa Rican regions, Nicoya’s cup is marked by a softer, more refined acidity balanced by a full, rounded body. The result is a coffee of elegance and depth, shaped by its microclimate and the dedication of smallholder farmers.

Coffee itself is rich in antioxidants and polyphenols - compounds increasingly associated with wellbeing and healthy ageing. In Nicoya, these qualities take on an added resonance. It is no coincidence that French fashion house Chanel selected green coffee from this very region as one of three cornerstone ingredients in its celebrated Blue Serum, alongside Bosana olives from Sardinia and wild lentisk from Ikaria - a tribute to the idea that Nicoya’s rare beans embody the same youthful vitality and life-lengthening properties for which the region itself is renowned.
