About This Coffee

Unlike the familiar Arabica and Robusta species that dominate the coffee world, Excelsa is an exceptionally rare coffee species with a character entirely of its own. Often referred to as the ‘Emperor of Coffees’, it grows on an imposing tree that can reach heights of up to 15 metres, making it quite unlike the compact coffee plants seen across most commercial farms.

Its rarity is part of what makes this coffee so extraordinary. Excelsa is produced on a tiny scale globally, and pure lots are exceptionally difficult to find. At Coffea Diversa in Costa Rica, one of the world’s most remarkable collections of coffee species and varieties, Excelsa is cultivated separately, allowing its distinctive character to be experienced without blending it with more conventional coffees.

This particular lot offers a fascinating glimpse into just how diverse coffee can be beyond Arabica. Naturally processed to complement the species’ unusual profile, it produces a rich, full-bodied cup with remarkably little bitterness.

For those accustomed to traditional speciality coffee, Excelsa is something genuinely different: rare, complex, and wonderfully unconventional. It is an opportunity to taste one of coffee’s least encountered species in its pure form, and to discover a side of the coffee world that very few people ever experience.

Roasting

We roast all our coffee beans in small artisanal batches each day to preserve freshness and consistency. All ground coffee is ground to order just before shipping, so you can be assured your coffee has arrived as fresh as possible.

The majority of our coffees are medium roasted as a standard, unless otherwise stated on the product page.

Please contact us if you have any questions about our coffees or the way we roast.

Shipping

All orders are packed and shipped from our roastery in the UK.

We aim to process and ship orders within 1-2 working days, although large orders containing multiple varieties of roasted coffee may take slightly longer.

UK shipping is free on orders over £100.

For international orders, shipping costs and any duties & taxes are calculated and prepaid for at checkout - Any charges at customs are then dealt with in advance by us to ensure your coffee arrives as quickly as possible.

Taste Profile

Full-bodied, smooth, and remarkably low in bitterness, this rare Excelsa has a richly layered savoury-sweet character. Rounded notes of cocoa and peanut are joined by dried fig, prune, brown sugar, and toffee, with touches of tropical fruit and florals bringing lift and complexity. A gentle spice reminiscent of toasted star anise carries through to a clean, lingering finish.

The world's largest private collection of coffee varietals

Coffea Diversa Garden

Tucked away in Costa Rica’s remote Biolley District, Coffea Diversa is unlike any other coffee estate. Known as "Jardin Botanica de Cafe", the farm to the world’s largest private collection of coffee species, botanical varieties, and cultivars. With over 200 in total, it is a living archive of global coffee biodiversity.

Founded by Gonzalo Hernandez, one of the world’s leading coffee varietal specialists, the estate describes itself as a ‘coffee garden’ where rare heritage species, many of them near-forgotten, are cultivated with extraordinary care. Coffea Diversa is more than an estate - It is a living reference for the world’s rarest and most distinctive coffee varieties.

The estate’s location is as remarkable as its collection - Nestled at the confluence of the Atlantic and Pacific climates and situated within a pristine biodiversity corridor near La Amistad International Park. This interplay of altitude, volcanic soil, and unique microclimate produces coffees of striking complexity and clarity.

Coffea Diversa also holds the unique distinction of being the only coffee farm to win the full Podium of Paris, achieving Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at the prestigious AVPA competition in France.
