About This Coffee

Far beyond the traditional growing regions, the Japanese island of Tokunoshima is an extraordinary place to cultivate coffee. Sitting at almost 28 degrees north, the island is better known for its remarkable subtropical forests, recognised as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021 for their exceptional biodiversity.

Miyade Estate was established in 2007 by owner Hiroshi Miyade, after years of working as a chef in Osaka. Establishing coffee on Tokunoshima Island was far from straightforward, and his first 2500 trees took four and a half years to grow, only for the entire planting to be destroyed by a single typhoon.

The farm he rebuilt has been meticulously shaped around the island’s climate and Japan’s four distinct seasons. Ahead of typhoons and heavy rain, the coffee trees are tied down to ti plants, allowing them to bend with the weather rather than stand against it. Because the farm directly borders the World Heritage area, the estate is farmed with particular sensitivity to the surrounding ecosystem. Invasive species are not used for shade or wind protection, so Miyade has built the farm around planting better suited to the island, using guava as a natural windbreak and moringa for shade.

Roasting

We roast all our coffee beans in small artisanal batches each day to preserve freshness and consistency. All ground coffee is ground to order just before shipping, so you can be assured your coffee has arrived as fresh as possible.

The majority of our coffees are medium roasted as a standard, unless otherwise stated on the product page.

Please contact us if you have any questions about our coffees or the way we roast.

Shipping

All orders are packed and shipped from our roastery in the UK.

We aim to process and ship orders within 1-2 working days, although large orders containing multiple varieties of roasted coffee may take slightly longer.

UK shipping is free on orders over £100.

For international orders, shipping costs and any duties & taxes are calculated and prepaid for at checkout - Any charges at customs are then dealt with in advance by us to ensure your coffee arrives as quickly as possible.

Taste Profile

A rare opportunity to try this smooth, well-rounded cup from an origin that almost never exports its coffee. Subtle earthy tones and spiced notes sit underneath a pleasant, creamy mouthfeel with moderate acidity. Notes of dried fruit, nuts, and milky chocolate carry through to a juicy, layered finish.

Miyade Coffee Garden

Japan’s four distinct seasons make coffee cultivation here exceptionally demanding. Unlike in the tropics, the trees cannot grow continuously through the year: summer heat slows them, winter light is too weak to sustain vigorous growth, and much of their development is concentrated into spring and autumn. For Miyade, bringing Yellow Bourbon to full ripeness this far north means working within an unusually narrow natural window, making every harvest from the estate a remarkable achievement in its own right.

That same attention continues through the harvest. This tiny lot of Yellow Bourbon was picked only when fully ripe, before being fully washed and slowly shade dried for thirty days in a controlled dry room. The parchment is then rested under carefully managed temperature and humidity, preserving the clarity and delicacy of the coffee before roasting. Only 5kg of this harvest was exported at all, straight to us, making this an exceptionally small allocation from an origin whose coffee almost never leaves Japan.
