Distinct aromatics of jasmine, mirabelle plums, and a medley of red fruits. Caramel and apple tones break through and finish with almost candy-like notes at the end of the cup.

Located in the Boquete region of Panama, Hacienda La Esmeralda is a multiple award-winning coffee farm run by the Peterson family that has consistently achieved record-breaking prices at auction. The whole family is involved in production and prides themselves on absolute consistency and excellence in preparation, which is perhaps why they grow the finest Geisha in the world.
The estate is based in the province of Chiriqui in South-West Panama. This area has a mountainous topography, producing various microclimates which have a distinct influence on the coffee beans profile. The fairly cool weather and recurrent mists slow down the ripening of the coffee cherries, yielding a denser and more flavourful bean.
This exceptionally rare Montana San Jose was available only at private auction and bought exclusively by Sea Island Coffee. Each year Hacienda La Esmeralda’s experimental micro-lots achieve record-breaking prices and this year was no different. Of all 20 samples we cupped, the Montana San Jose was, in our opinion, the most spectacular, and we are proud to offer regular consumers the opportunity to try such an exclusive coffee - when most auction lots are snapped up by private buyers and baristas for competitions.
Grown at 1750 metres on Esmeralda’s Cañas Verdes farm, these fully washed geisha beans were fermented in a closed steel tank for 68 hours and then slow dried for 19 days on raised beds, followed by an additional 8 hours in a mechanical drier, creating the intense aroma and bright acidity that is characteristic of Esmeralda’s world-famous geishas.
