About This Coffee

Sea Island has carefully sourced the very best Yemeni coffees available, produced under the famous ‘White Camel’ label by Ahmed Alhamdani. The availability of this brand is very limited, with each coffee named according to the different areas in which they grow. All White Camel coffee is grown at altitudes of 1500 meters or more above sea level, depending on the region where the coffee is produced, naturally sun-dried on earth drying grounds, and sorted by hand.

Sanani is one of the two main types of coffee beans produced in Yemen (Matari being the other) and is somewhat more common than Matari coffee, sourced from small plots located around the Yemeni highlands, ‘Sanani’ describes a mixture of coffees from several regions west of Sana’a. The cup profile is typically more balanced, less acidic, and less complex than the Matari or Ismaili coffees.

Roasting

We roast all our coffee beans in small artisanal batches each day to preserve freshness and consistency. All ground coffee is ground to order just before shipping, so you can be assured your coffee has arrived as fresh as possible.

The majority of our coffees are medium roasted as a standard, unless otherwise stated on the product page.

Please contact us if you have any questions about our coffees or the way we roast.

Shipping

All orders are packed and shipped from our roastery in the UK.

We aim to process and ship orders within 1-2 working days, although large orders containing multiple varieties of roasted coffee may take slightly longer.

UK shipping is free on orders over £100.

For international orders, shipping costs and any duties & taxes are calculated and prepaid for at checkout - Any charges at customs are then dealt with in advance by us to ensure your coffee arrives as quickly as possible.

Taste Profile

Medium-bodied and on the lighter side, with a distinctly fruity character and notes of raspberry, chocolate, cinnamon, and apricots.

The story of

Yemen's Coffee History

An important and integral part of coffee’s history, Yemen is the origin of the term ‘Coffea Arabica’ and was the first country in the world to grow coffee commercially, with terraced farms flourishing by the 1400s. Today, most of the coffee grown in Yemen consists of ancient heirloom varietals of Arabica coffee that originally came from Ethiopia, most of them found almost nowhere else in the world, creating coffees that are unique in taste profile to Yemen. Yemeni coffees are often referred to today as ‘Mocha’ coffees - the word ‘Mocha’ is a derivative of the name of Yemen’s port of Mocha (al-Mukha), through which coffee was historically exported to the rest of the world.

The availability of Yemeni coffee is extremely scarce, and the amount produced decreases year after year, with only a small amount being exported. Due to the lack of rain in this region the coffee plantations need to be irrigated, but the dry air does have the benefit of creating a very small and extremely hard coffee bean.
