About This Coffee

Unfortunately, our Wild Bat Coffee has been unavailable for a few years now and will not be returning. Due to climate change, the bats left the forest surrounding Coffea Diversa's farm. If you're looking for an alternative, please take a look at our Wild Toucan coffees from the same estate.

The Artibeus Jamaicensis is the bat species found in the forests surrounding the Coffea Diversa Estate in Biolley, Southern Costa Rica on the border of Panama. The wild bats feed on the exotic coffee cherries but, unlike most wild animal coffees (like the famous Kopi Luwak), the cherries are not ingested whole. Instead, the bat breaks the skin of the ripe cherry with its teeth, feeds on the pulp, and licks the sugar-rich mucilage - initiating a uniquely natural processing method.

The coffee cherries are left on the tree and exposed to the sun as nature's way of drying the coffee in its parchment. Combined with the discriminating selection of only the ripest coffee cherries by the bats, this makes for an unusual cup of speciality coffee - remarkably fruity and floral with a delicate acidity.

Roasting

We roast all our coffee beans in small artisanal batches each day to preserve freshness and consistency. All ground coffee is ground to order just before shipping, so you can be assured your coffee has arrived as fresh as possible.

The majority of our coffees are medium roasted as a standard, unless otherwise stated on the product page.

Please contact us if you have any questions about our coffees or the way we roast.

Shipping

Sea Island are happy to offer express shipping and tracking to almost every country in the world. For international orders, shipping costs and any duties & taxes are calculated and prepaid for at checkout - Any charges at customs are then dealt with in advance by Sea Island to ensure your coffee is received as quickly as possible.

All orders are packed and shipped from our roastery in the UK. We aim to process and ship orders within 1-2 working days, although large orders containing multiple varieties of roasted coffee may take slightly longer.
